Who we are

A prevention-focused initiative for the first encounter that matters.

The Chaperone Initiative is a nonprofit youth-safety initiative working so that when a young person reaches out online, what reaches back is a trusted human connection. We bring together mission, research and operational delivery, uniting the Initiative, the University of Illinois Chicago, and Chaperone Health, to make that connection real, measurable and scalable.

Connection first

No one should navigate a hard moment alone.

Our mission

Trusted human connection, when young people first reach out.

The Chaperone Initiative helps vulnerable youth find trusted human support online in the earliest moments of their search for help: the moments most likely to be answered, instead, by exploitation, manipulation or a harmful community. We focus there because those first moments shape what comes next.

Our work is grounded in a simple conviction: a young person navigating a difficult moment should not navigate it alone. When early trusted connection meets them with a caring human being, the path forward looks different. Technology supports the people doing the work; it never replaces trained Peer Chaperones or appropriate professional help.

What we are not. The Chaperone Initiative is not therapy, clinical treatment, diagnosis, crisis counseling or emergency response. We never place a person in crisis behind a form. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

The premise

Prevention, not just response.

  • Reach young people at the first moment they seek help online.
  • Lead with trained Peer Chaperones for real human connection.
  • Use technology to support people, never to monitor or surveil them.
  • Measure what works with independent research and evaluation.
Our vision

A future where the first encounter is a trusted one.

We envision a future where every young person seeking support online meets trusted human connection, where reaching out for help is answered with care rather than exploitation.

Earlier Support

Trusted human support arrives at the earliest moment a young person looks for help, not in the aftermath, when the path forward is already harder.

Trusted Human Presence

Every young person who reaches out finds a steady, trained human presence, and, when needed, a warm path to the right professional help.

Responsible Scale

A model that is studied, refined and able to grow responsibly, so a safer digital future becomes reachable for whole communities, not just a few.

Why we exist

Four beliefs that shape everything we do.

The internet has become the first place many young people turn when they need help. That reality is the reason this Initiative exists, and the reason we believe prevention deserves real investment.

The internet is the first place many youth seek help

When a young person is struggling, the search often begins online, quietly, at any hour, sometimes far from the adults who care about them. We meet that reality where it actually happens.

Earlier connection creates more options

Reaching a young person early, while a hard moment is still just a hard moment and not yet exploitation, manipulation or a harmful community, keeps more paths open than waiting until damage is done. Earlier connection is where compassion and possibility meet.

Trusted human connection matters

No tool replaces a caring person. Peer Chaperones offer relatable, trained, human support, and technology assists them so they can be present at the right moment for the right young person.

The moment support is needed matters

The response a young person receives the moment support is needed can shape the path that follows. When that response is trusted and human, it opens a door toward safety, support and connection.

"No one navigates alone: trusted human connection at the moment it matters most."

How we are organized

Three roles, one mission, clear by design.

For funders and partners, clarity matters. The Initiative, the University of Illinois Chicago and Chaperone Health each play a distinct role: mission, funding and sponsored access; research and evaluation; and operational delivery. The specifics of this framework are being finalized.

The Chaperone Initiative

The nonprofit initiative that holds the mission. We set direction, build funding strategy, and expand sponsored access to defined youth populations and communities.

Chaperone Health

The operational engine. Chaperone Health provides the platform and the Peer Chaperone infrastructure: supervision, safety workflows and day-to-day delivery.

How delivery works
Validation pending Operating at scale relies on this partnership model. References to reaching hundreds of thousands of people and to offering services at cost describe our intended model; these figures and claims are not yet independently verified.
Why an academic partner

Independence is part of the design.

The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) is our founding academic research partner. Independent academic involvement helps ensure the Initiative's claims are examined with rigor, transparency, and separation from program delivery. That structural separation is why the three-way relationship exists at all.

It gives funders and partners confidence that what we build is shaped by what genuinely helps young people, and that impact claims will be tested and reported honestly over time. Additional university and research partnerships may be announced as the Initiative grows. The detail of the evaluation lives on our research page; how we steward funds, data and oversight lives on our trust page.
